When I moved back to Lititz nine years ago, I was excited to find out that in my absence they had added yet another downtown-centric event to their growing list of happenings. In 2008, the Fire & Ice Festival was still in its first few years. It was anchored by a smattering of ice sculptures in front of the Main Street stores and a small chili cook off at the nearby Lititz Elementary school. Nine years later, this event has grown into not only a great local event, but one that attracts visitors from all over the region to our amazing “small” town.
The Lititz Leos have expanded their Fire & Ice Festival to include a whole weekend of festivities that kicks off during a Friday night spectacular. Friday night during the festival really showcases the businesses and organizations that step up to the plate time and again to support these large-scale events in our town. These types of events don’t come together without substantial support from businesses and volunteers alike.
This year downtown was literally buzzing with scores of spectators watching the ice carving, enjoying the LED light displays in the trees, roasting marshmallows with the Boy Scouts, listening to live music in the band shell, patronizing the food trucks parked in Lititz Springs Park, and just strolling down the closed of portions of Broad and Main streets. The crowds on Friday night for the festival are really starting to rival the 4th of July festivities in terms of size.
It really is astounding to see the growth this event has achieved year after year. It’s just another amazing thing about the town our family calls home, and another reason I’m grateful to live in such a unique community.
