The Lititz Car Cruise

One of the many events the Lititz Lions organization puts on in our community is the Car Cruise.  More than 200 classic cars and vehicles line East Main Street for four or five hours on a summer evening each August.  From the Bull’s Head Public House to well beyond the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery you can peruse Chevy Bel Airs, Ford Mustangs, and Plymouth Superbirds to your heart’s content.

I’m not much of a car person myself.  I’m more of a point A to point B kind of guy. Personally, the means by which I get to those points is a matter of function not form.  That being said, you still can’t help but notice these classic cars’ inherent beauty and the care and time their owners put into their preservation.  The gleaming chrome, the polished headlights, and the spotless multi-color interiors are a testament to their dedication and love for these automobiles.  Being around others who are passionate about something is always uplifting regardless of whether you share their interests.

When I attend a car show as a photographer I usually focus on the details.  I try to pick out the small things that stand out that set each car apart from its brethren: the vibrant color contrasts on the body, the unusual hood ornament, the ornate hubcaps.  One thing in particular I like to capture is the nameplate.  The loopy script of a Corvette Stingray, the angular font on a Chevy Bel Air that’s reminiscent of a roadside diner sign, or the pure 80’s Delorean lettering each squarely place their respective cars in specific times in American history.
